Hello. My '98 (w/ 88,000 miles) makes a strange clicking sound. The noise occurrs slightly when I first start it up. When I accelerate, it is much louder. The noise will stop when I hit about 30 mph. It will also stop after I have driven the car for about 5 minutes. Any ideas? And how much to fix?

if it is the 3100 v6 they have a valve train problem, they can go the whole life of the car like that for sure, just one of those gm problems. But check to see if the intake is leaking, when facing the engine, look to the left on top, and down in the v valley see if it is wet. They do have a intake issue, check that. If it is a valve train noise, get it checked, I would start using lucas at every oil change as well/./. Also if it is the quad 4, sounds like a bearing and head is going out as well. The quad four is a nasty motor.

Let a dealer hear this noise and determine what it may be--a sludge condition may be preventing oil from circulating properly--the valves may be tapping from lack of lubrication---Removing sludge is a qualified mechanic job--if the valve train is damaged it could be a lot closer to 2000 to fix properly---figure 45 or 50 an hour plus all the parts.

Iwould get it checked by a reliable mechanic. Never go to a dealer xcept for warranty work. A clicking sound is possibly the sound of a wheel bearing about to fail.
