The NFL did that just to see how many fools would ask that question on Yahoo! Answers. I think it is somewhere around 3,000,000 fools. Do any of these fools ever read Yahoo! Answers? Obviously not.

It is to let the refs know that the QB has a "headset" on to communicate plays with the coach. Only one player is allowed on the field with a "headset" on.
