White - sorry to be gross - shows anything wrong fastest.
Can be cleaned with bleach for cleanest germ free condition against body.
Of course practical could be texture and color that matches all the work when fixing up bathroom tile, faucets, paint, etc. As a total guy I just used whatever my ex-wife bought and let me touch. Talkin practical: What's up with the no use or die towels for guests? How absorbent is fancy lace?

Dark Green or Blue. They're colorful AND they don't stain as badly as other towels.

Gray or beige would be the most practical. But only if those colours look good in your bathroom.

dark browns might paintings, possibly a burgundy (i do no longer understand the right colour of olive, so it could look slightly "Christmas-y"), i understand you stated you needed to stay remote from mild hues, yet i think of a marvelous yellow - perhaps a buttercup colour - might look marvelous. merely be careful of what you choose in spite of the undeniable fact that...dark carpet has a tendency to make areas look smaller than they are easily!
