do you use quotes or underline a ship's name? I totally forgot, and I need to finish my honors english assignment. :-x

As a sailor, I'd use quotes - but don't call a ship "the", any more than you'd call Bill Smith "the Bill Smith". However, the use of quotes, underlines, and much else can be a matter of "house style". If you haven't been given a reference for style you could use the Public Service or Government form - or Fowler's Modern English Usage might help.

in my writing, and everything I've seen.......and I've read A LOT of naval history....ships names are italicized....... use "the" when using the formal name, which has the two or three letter abbreviation in front of it...as in "the RMS Queen Mary" or "the USS Iowa" or "the SS Minnow"

otherwise just the name...he sailed on Titanic; Iowa left port at 8 AM, Minnow was lost while on a three hour tour.......
