It is cheaper to fly into Tokyo but I will be someways from Toyama. Toyama has a direct flight for much more money.

Toyama is very far, particularly from Tokyo.
There is Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo station to Toyama station. But the schedule of the bullet train is limited. Total cost would be around 15,000yen(US$130), 5hrs ride in total.

From Kansai International Airport (Osaka) to Toyama station is about 4hr 30min to 5 hrs. You need to go to Shin-Osaka station first, then you will find direct train to Toyama. Fare would be from 12,000-15,000 yen (depends on the trains).

Avoid Centrair airport (Nagoya), it is too complicated.

I worry because Toyama is very far from both Tokyo and Osaka city, and you'll get lost easily. Local people don't speak English. And the schedule of the direct train is limited. If you arrived at Japan in the evening, you will need to stay in the city (Tokyo or Osaka) for one night.
Don't you have anybody who pick you up at airport?

Your travel agent should be able to hook you up with a relatively cheap flight from Tokyo to Toyama. I think that would be the way to go. My friend flew from Nebraska to Tokyo, then added a leg to Hokkaido, and I think it was only like a $100 extra. This is great, because trains will cost you about a $100, it sounds like.

If your local travel agent doesn't know anything, try a bigger one. When I was in the States years ago, I always used triple-A. Some of the Japanese tourist agencies are based in the States, too.

Don't know where you are flying from, so I can't really recommend anything else.

There is no international airport in Toyama. You must arrive in Narita or one of the othe 2 big international airports to clear customs. Best way from there is by train.

Toyama doesn't have an international airport.

Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai and Nagoya (I can't remember the name) are the 3 big international airports.

From there, you must take the trains.
