I have seen on this site as well as others Americans saying Britain doesn't have a crime rate. so i thought i'd investigate. The results were a big surprise to me.

Murder rate:(per 100,000 population, national averages for all categories)
US- 6.9
UK-2.01

Rape
US-32.2
UK-39.1

Assault
US-340.1
UK-1862

Burglary
US-814.5
UK-1677

Robbery
US-195.4
UK-384

Vehicle crime
US-526.5
UK-2061

To summarise: Your roughly 3.5 times more likely to be murdered in a US city than a UK city. Rape is only slightly higher for the UK. BUT.......

Your.... nearly 5.5 times more likely to be assaulted in a UK city
More than twice as likely to be burgled in a UK city
nearly twice as likely to witness a robbery in a UK city
nearly 4 times more likely to have your car stolen in a UK city.

US "beats" UK on 1 cat, UK "beats" US on FIVE categories.

To put it into perspective, My city- Manchester, England, is more dangerous than Detroit, Michigan.

Nicely Done. I've been saying that the media hypes up the bad news . Someone in California lets gas , and a minute later the news is in New York. Everyone in between gets the impression that the stink is just around the corner and none feel "safe" from the smell.

Property crimes are higher in UK than I thought. Good work.

I'm American and fully aware that crime is not only in the UK, but everywhere else as well.

I thought it was the ROW that gave America the corner on "you're crime-ridden".

Crime is a function of population density - not nationality.

Interesting to say the least. Crime is worldwide and probably a lot less know about some countries. My national news stations don't make it a point to give statistics on other countries. We usually get monthly, quarterly or yearly statistics depending on how "important" it is to who is releasing the info. We do get BBC America but lots of times coincide with our own local news. But I do enjoy many of your comedic shows!

I think its because we constantly see and hear about Brits (here on YA! especially) bashing America to no end. I just naturally assumed that the UK must be a far far better place than the US. A kind of Utopia if you will.

Guess not.

How can this be ?

The UK has one of the planet's strictest bodies of law against most anything that could be considered a weapon- you are prohibited by LAW from defending yourself...you have cornered the world market on CCTV cameras...

...and yet...

A truly wonderful country...legislated beyond recognition.

Basically Americans know little about other countries in general. They also likely think crime is really low here in Canada. Perhaps when it comes to shootings, but we have a hefty enough crime rate here in general. Theft is pretty common, as are drug offenses.

Britain is not part of the contiguous 48 states nor the 3 satellites. Other than the sun, everything else is science fiction. The big bang occurred in 1492 and live was created in 1776.

A few of them actually know the truth.

Saying Manchester is more dangerous than Detroit is a scary thought. What can you attribute this to, have they looked at that data?

That's pretty sad....I live in the US and think Detroit is one of the worst cities we have!

Because most Americans don't know anything when it comes to the world outside US and don't bother to learn
