The hard drive would have a capacity of 160g before the operating system was installed, then there is the actual file system which will take some space and system restore files etc.
so it's not hard to lose some space, but why are you worried 143 gigabytes is a fair sized hard drive,my first pc had 5 gigabytes and i never used all the space.

The exact number of bytes in a kilobyte has traditionally been ambiguous. Locations in electronic memory circuits are identified by bit vectors, so the most cost-beneficial size for a memory circuit uses the full range of address values, or some power of 2. Since 1024 is a power of 2 and is only slightly in excess of 1000, memory chip makers found it convenient to use multiples of 1024 in marketing material, approximating or treating the additional 24 bytes of each group as manufacturing overhead. At the same time, marketing material for products that did not have the same cost-benefit considerations, such as magnetic disks and networking equipment, continued to use strict decimal-based units.

their could be a number of reasons. the most likely reason if this was the advertised space is because the way windows calculates hd space and the way manufacturers calculate it, also once the drive is formatted another big portion of space.

If the drive used to report 160gb total on windows. it could be possible that the hd took a solid hit resulting in damaged sectors

It could also be a calculation error of the drives total space, try running disk check to see if it fixes it

Vista? that is your problem. Plus, the manufacturer can't get it exact. it could be 160GB and only be 140GB or even 170GB. Plus, some manufacturers use binary system to measure space, while some use bytes and this could cause you to lose up to 50GB of space! there are many variables, but these are hte most common. And as i said earlier, Vista takes a lot of space (15GB for Home Premium)!
