So many? With less than 30% of the US citizens having a bachelors degree, it is still important. Just remember you don't want to be 45 someday and jealous of people with a degree.

As for those who say people with degrees don't want to do physical labor - RIGHT. I did not get several degrees to answer the phone or be a secretary. We all have different talents. If someone chooses not to get a college degree then thats up to them.

As for someone "training" someone with a college degree, yes- that happens. Its called 'firm specific training'.--- What you need to know to work in a specific workplace. It's not the same as the KSA's you need to get a job in the first place.

It's true that a lot of people get degree, but certainly not the majority of the population.

I have an engineering degree. During the peak of hi-tech some technicians where rolling in the same $$ as I was and they were laughing saying that their two year diplomas where just as good as an engineering degree. They had a point there too - the bubble eventaully burst and we were all out of work regardless of degree or not.

But, I found higher quality work in a much faster time because of my degree. For me, its was when times where tough that I saw having a degree making a real difference because employers are much more pickier.

So, if you are able (ie if you are smart enough and wtih enough $$) it is worthwhile. But make sure it is a useful degree and not something in Latin Literature or something useless.

The education system supports higher education but the kids are getting dumber. Why is this happening? To me the teachers now days are lazy and the colleges are actually teaching children things we did in the past learn in high school. I believe that companies are very much wrong about looking a college degrees for hiring potential people. Why?
I am 45 and I have trained many college educated people and I swear I believe the old fashion way of testing for jobs should be reinstated back into the work force. College educated most of the time are book smart and lack the ability to use common sense. They think they are better than others and usually left after awhile. I hated ever training a college educated people......usually too they will not do anything of physical labor of any sorts ...they said: I didn't get college educated to get my hands dirty. They only wanted to sit behind a desk.

Basically I know many to that cook hamburgers at McDonalds. College education is overated and I believe it is one of the worse forms of discrimination.

Also, let me say I do believe college is important for Drs, dentist, lawyers and that kind of professions.

The average 25 year old with a degree makes $20K more per year than the average 25 year old without a degree. The gap widens with age.

And then there are the nonmonetary advantages of gaining knowledge.

here in las Vegas where they worship cheap labor i had to leave off my degree because i kept getting your to over qualified(we don't want to pay you that much) i learned to make my resume seem like i would take less then what it should pay for that job that got me hired i know lot of friends with BA and masters that work in another field because no one is hiring or they other field pays more
i suggest getting a job in the field you like and still going to school when i ran a business for ten years i would rather hire some one with actually exp then some one right out of college
sometime you can work your way to the top from inside starting at the mail room it does work .

If nothing else a Degree is good just for your own personal well being of knowing and understanding the things around you. I enjoy learning, if not for a job, just to be able to do and fix things for myself. I not hire someone to fix for me, I learn to fix it myself. Just the money I save can equal a second part-time job, just in the money I save from learning.

Here's the Catch:

Anyone can get a degree, but its YOUR special talent, YOUR special skills, YOUR personality that will get YOU the job.

Like they say, no matter how smart a donkey gets....he's still a donkey.....

So get out there, and show those donkey's how BETTER you can be.
