Ok I have a pent 4 3.2ghz pc and I just upgraded the RAM from 512 to 2 gig today. However I still find that programs are opening up slow or are slow to start. Any other ideas what else I can do to get this to work better?

Well there could be many reasons. If it is a store bought pc it might have all those crazy programs running in the background. Or it could be spyware. Lets start with the background running programs. If you are running winXP go to start, and click in run. type in MSCONFIG. (in running vista, go to start, than search, type in msconfig, this should find it, just double click on it.) This will bring up another window. Click in the startup tab. This is all the programs that run when you start your pc. Go throught that list and uncheck the programs that you dont want running. Most of those on that list are things like yahoo, msn, and other programs that first start running when your pc starts. I usually diable all mine. The Services tab are also programs that start when your pc is turned on. I usually only diable the ones that arent made by microsoft. But be carefull in there, some need to run to make your computer to run. I would just leave that area alone unless you know what you are doing. Alright, now on to spyware. Spyware is out there more that virus's are. In 6 years i got maybe 10 virus's and in one day i could download 100 spyware item, just about every website kicks out spyware. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.php here is one program for spyware. There are many out there. Whatever one you like the best. I think microsoft even has a program to download.

This should be a fast pc,for sure. However, loading programs is mostly a function of the hard drive. So more ram does not speed that up.
What you should notice is that when you work in the programs they should be faster.
If not, then look at your cpu utilization using Windows Task Master (called up with Ctrl-alt-del)
If there is lots of cpu being used, then look for spyware and viruses.
Also, look at the Processes to see what stuff is running at the same time. Sometimes a bunch of stuff loads up that you do not need and which uses memory.
Good luck.

Maybe it's a virus. You should probably use the system restore. It will erase all the programs you put after the the computer was originally started but it's worth a try.

You could try getting a more powerful power supply, the problem could be that not enough power is getting to the appropriate hardware in ur computer

right click your computer icon, check for properties and see that you are truly using the 2 gigs.

if you are then that is weird, if it's not then make sure that the ram are connected correctly...make sure that they are clicked into the slots.

Extra memory won;t make it run faster..... you will have to get a faster CPU chip....... the best thing to do is to take it to a good computer repair shop and talk to the tech.... you may have to change the mother board..... it's best like I said .... talk to the tech...
