if you are talking about on a local level, the good old car wash is great, once you find a good location, a school or business, use their parking lot, and they will often donate the cost of the water, so all you need is some towels, some buckets, and a cleaner, you even can use mild dish detergent, and lots of people, so all you take in is profit! charge a few dollars, most will donate more

another idea is a dinner, grocery stores will usually donate a few of the food items, so go to all of them to get what you need, plan a theme and menu and enlist cooks, an afternoon tea even if held later in the day, is nice, go for elegant, something different

finally, one of my favorite ideas , is a penny drive, ask people to donate pennies, a school district in PA raised $300,000 this way, in a short amount of time!

Marketing designed to take advantage of people's pity. Sympathy, empathy and pity generally motivate people to take action -- such as making a donation.
