Stick to your man, and I mean stay on him.
Normally, try stay between your man and the goals.
When your man has the ball jockey him untill you are certain you can tackle him, or to give your fellow defenders enough time to drop back and assist you.
Help your fellow defenders out, whether that be good 'MAN ON' calls or just being there to give them a pass out of trouble.
Don't get stuck into the mentality of 'CLEAR IT', a GREAT defender can assess the situation and can look for a pass out of trouble to maintain possession.
And the most important thing you'll probably need to know is, that you will make mistakes, every one does, it's just whether you let them affect you.
(When I say 'man'... I mean the player) =\

Center backs often run the defense. One stays back more while the other plays more in front. first off if the coach is doing zonal marking one of the center backs is sweeping back and forth depending what side of the field the ball is on. If the coach is doing more of a marking defense then center backs dont usually get a person to mark.
some advice.
1. always watch the ball and read the game. some of the best center backs read the game better then most strikers.
2. dont forget to push up, but be prepared to run back and defend.
3. Always listen to the goalkeeper. and NEVER cross the ball across the goal mouth.
4. You dont always have to slide tackle. Remember Center backs are the last line of defense, and if you miss the tackle and on the ground the player will have a break away and more and likely a goal.
5. Watch professional games a pay attention to Center backs and there how the play their positions. I learned a lot over the years watching Maldini. Italians are great to watch for get ideas for playing defense.
6. since you already playing in offence take what you learn and aply it to what you are going to face.
7. A drill that your coach can do on a later date, have the team line up in 4 lines then have them attack the goal with you and the goalkeeper. If you take control of the ball then the next set will go. you can rotate with other defenders. to get some rest, but it is a great way to work on reading the game and learning defensive plays.
I hope this helps. I cant put down all my secrets. Good Luck

This will help you in being a defender in general:
1.Tactical anticipation
Top level defenders read the game well and are always one step ahead of their opposition. Observe quality defenders in competitive matches and you will see that they anticipate the movement of the person they are marking. Even if their enemy has more pace, they close him down and (usually) beat him to the ball purely thanks to their good tactical apprehension/anticipation.
2.Experience
The more 1v1 challenges you make throughout your development, the more familiar you will become against offensive tricks, turns and moves. Good defending is not just about how you tackle. As you gain more experience you will learn to “get into the head” of your opponent and his moves will never surprise you. One of the biggest mistakes young players commit is lacking patience. Never charge in at an opponent unless you know that he lacks the option of beating you/going around you.
3.Fitness
Quickness, strength and stamina are probably the three main abilities needed when you are playing in defense. Closing down your opponent is done by quickly repositioning or shuffling your footing so that you are always in front of him. Strength will help you in winning 50-50 balls and when shielding the ball. Good stamina is very important. When you are tired, you lose concentration and react slower.
4.Fundamental skills
Defenders can get away with a lot of things but fundamental skills are required. Heading, passing and ball control are most important. You need to be confident in your ball skills because technical mistakes are very costly for defenders.

how do you play 4-4-3? aren't there only 10 outfield players and the keeper makes 11?
My advice is to watch what the other CB does and learn that way. basically the job of CBs is to coordinate the defense and mark when the attackers get past the midfield

You must be fast....Think offensive , defend the midfield line , use the offside trap and rundown any breakaways. When the ball is in the defensive(your) third stay inside the 18 and play left or right zone. take direction from your keeper. When the ball is in the fore ward (their) third look to send loose balls fore ward(to corners or at goal) and for the chance for an overlapping run on goal. Good Luck

I'd try a different formation for a start if the ref clocks you've got 12 players on the pitch you'll never get to kick a ball.
Try a 4-4-2 (you dont include the keeper in a formation)

well all you gotta do is when a game be sure to stick with your person and when you see that someones not being mark yell the # and tell your teamates to cover the person. let your goalie see the whole field. and when theirs a chance try to put the player from the other team offsides.

defenders? instead of taking the ball up to the net you normally kick it up field to a mid fielder or foward. [if its on your side DONT kick it in the middle of the field but out to the wings/ sides of the field] when the other team gets to your side with the ball & passes mid-field go charge the person with the ball and give it to one of your players, if they get behind you run as fast as you can and get between them and the net. always stay between them and the net. once their past you , try and get it away. in the case the ball is kick out and they get a corner kick , you take the goal post or a nearby person, stay btwn them and the net!! dont forget that lol.

a 4-4-3 is too many people. you only have 10 plus a goalie. defendards is not a word. it's defender.
but to answer your question. you are the last line of defense. cover any opposing striker that enters the area. stick with them and prevent them from shooting.
