At night cage them. They get into things and they don't smell that bad. put a bell on there collar so if it gets out you can hear it. Also if you dont have a cage yet get a glass one thats made of ferrets or bunnys.

One Thing about ferrets is a lot of people "say" They stink, but I know, that is total lie because, I work at ferret shelter and there is over 80 ferrets even on hot days they don't stink, the only reason that the ferret might stink is if the human over bathes it ( it makes there skin produce more oil than normal), the human doesn't regularly clean out the litter box, or if the bedding isn't changed regularly. Another thing about ferrets is you should not feed them any other bagged food except the food that comes out of a bag that says "Ferret Food" on it. One disease they can get is adrenal disease ; adrenal disease makes them lose there fur. you can help them grow back there fur by taking to the vet and getting a lupron shot each month. The only other thing I can think of is they need a lot of love they love plying around they are very social and need at least two hours of romp around time each day.

Ferrets need a lot of specialized food/care/attention. They're prone to adrenal disease (expensive to treat) and Aluetion disease.

There's a book out called Ferrets for Dummies which is very good.

I'd really recommend getting onto a ferret bulletin board and listening to what's going on there, as the ferret owners talk.

Ferrets also smell (strongly sometimes), need time outside their cages, can get into all sorts of trouble, and live to be about 8 years old.

I'd very highly recommend you email some of the ferret rescue groups, you'll get good information from them.

The best and only advice I will give you is to get your hands on a copy of the book "Ferrets for Dummies". This has been my ultimate resource for the past 6 years, and I still check it first when I have a question (at least one where I don't need advice from my vet).

You should do a TON of research before you go buying a ferret. www.ferret.org or something like that is a great place to start. Google for more pages. There are a ton of things that you should know before buying. They do smell a little, but that can be remedied with a little squirt of Marshalls deodorizer in their water. They hide things, and if they find a hole that they can get past their eyes, they can get the rest of their bodies in it. They are blasts, my three love to torment my mom and play with my mix breed german shepard, they also hide the dog's food inside my stepdads shoes. Mine dont steal much more than the dog's food, but others have been known to steal and hide many various things. As for illnesses, they can have many, and your research should give you an idea of what kinds of illnesses and the cost ranges.

GOOD FOR YOU! I've got two and love em to pieces. They are very social and LOVE to play and explore. They have a personality that can't be beat.
The only reason ppl say they smell is because they don't clean the cage enough!
They are susceptable to pnemonia, so bathe them with care. Lots of links online to check out.

As soon as your mom knows they smell... no chance. Ferrets are wonderful pets, but hard to take care of.

THEY SMELL and if you get one, you'll smell too. there's nothing you can do to stop it. even if you remove the scent glands. they still smell. and your whole house will smell.

they also sling their poop. all over the place. it gets on the walls.

DONT get a ferret.
