This goes a few ways.

First, they probably either picked it up from a group of elitists known as classic rock generics. These people are trapped in the 80s and demand everyone to listen to them or they suck...some have even cried about all music starting with Nirvana and onwards. They view 90s/00s music as blink-182, Nickelback, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy, and MCR...ignoring a slew of hard rock bands from the same eras.

Chances are though...the music just does not appeal to them. Maybe they're not interesting in crazy hair metal guitaring or classic sounds of Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, and Pink Floyd. Perhaps it's not their type.

However, laugh on...most kids actually do have some bands from the 70s and 80s in their collection. Don't assume MTV is dictatoring the music scene...it's viewership has dropped drastically...see, TRL ain't live all the time...it's viewership has dropped a lot due to the internets (which we're on right now).

In the end, it's all about tastes.

Maybe they think they hate. But in fact, maybe they've never really listened to the music from the 70's and 80's!

When teenagers think of the 70's, they think of disco. Yes, the 70's had disco, but that's not what it's all about.

I have no idea why they hate 80's music though. It's the punk rock scene except ten times better than whatever punk "rock" they listen to nowadays.

And both decades contained some of the heaviest musical acts to ever exist. I'd understand why they wouldn't like the 50's and 60's, even though I like those decades's music too, but the 70's and 80's were some of the wildest times.

You're thinking of the teenage sterotype. I'm 16, I believe that some of the best music ever created was made in the 70's & 80's, the 60's too.

I love music from the 70's and 80's, the 60's too! I'm 15 and I hate today's music (no offence if you like it).The only music Iisten to is from the 60's-80's.

maybe not 'hate' actually -- anyway, vice-versa! -- when "young" in the 70's etc. loved the pop music -- most of it -- & still do, and (more or less) DON'T like today's stuff! And not just one's age I'd say, but quality -- music then seemed more well-thought-out, well-composed & -produced...
and -- hopefully not Elitist -- maybe a lot of this stuff "over their heads"!, seriously, hip-hop be-bop whatever basically the same & monotonous, predominantly a beat, compared to c-1975 era where there was a lot of original, creative & imaginative stuff, (Moody Blues for example & all that [so to speak] Jazz), things you had to 'get into' compared to a gut-reaction.

Same reason those of us born in the 70s and 80s hated the stuff from the 50s and 60s - who wants to listen to the stuff their PARENTS listened to? Ewww. Most kids consider that a fate worse than death!

=)

The White Stripes Muse Smashing Pumpkins they don't probably sound like classic rock, yet they don't seem to be hardcore/rap/metallic/trash/demise metallic the two. edit: oh yeah, and Persophone is right. 9 Inch Nails is great. even in spite of the indisputable fact that i don't hear to a great number of gadget, they have a extensive committed fanbase who've already caught with them for a extremely long term so i'm useful they are going to stand the attempt of time.
