Believe it or not flies have TWO SETS of wings, it is just the second really does not look like wings. Under their main set of wings there is a tiny set that works more or less like a gyroscope and allows the fly to fly in the direction it wants. If you remove one of those wings (did this in college ento) the fly will still be able to fly but will be all over the place unable to right itself from having its orientation throw off. Some fly in circles, others hit walls. Nonetheless after a few moments the fly is able to gain back its orientation and fly straight again.

However if you were to remove one of the main wings the fly would not be able to gain any lift. An inch or two in random directions but the one wing and tiny set of gyroscope wings would not be enough.

Nope, it'd never get off the ground. It would walk around in circles.
The below poster who talks about flies having two wings is correct, though the second set is called a haltere and really just looks like a little bump. It would cause the fly to fly in circles. These second wings however are not considered wings, because they're vestigial.

No, the mechanics of flight with a non-fixed wing craft (or insect) are very different form fixed wing craft.

Moving wings have to move more air (by weight) than the craft itself (in this case the insect). Flies evolved two wings because one wing will not generate enough lift. So if you remove one wing the fly wont fly.
