As a general rule, YOU shouldn't leave your computer running all the time. However, a server or mainframe computer should remain on, except for maintainance and when the entire network is not in use. Unless you are running a complex calculation all the time, you probably won't need to run your computer constantly. Anyway, it saves power to shut down your computer at night. Or during the day, if you use it at night.

I see no problem leaving your computer running all the time (other than reducing the life of your power supply component). Computers really don't use as much energy as everyone is claiming. According to microsoft... when a PC is in 'Sleep' mode (aka Hibernating)... it only uses about 35w of power, as long as your power management turns off hard disks and turns off your monitor. Yes the fans run all the time but just turn your computer around and look at the voltage on those fan motors.. its not that much.

Well most people I know leave their computer on and when they aren't using it put it to sleep(Mac) or into hibernating(Windows).

If you mean completely on all the time: I do this when I'm rendering an animation, or some other time consuming thing.

Normally this doesn't effect desktops to much, at the most it slightly shortens the life.

If you're running an application such as SETI or climateprediction.net or your PC is some kind of server (i.e. web server), then you should leave it running. Otherwise there is no real reason to do so.

Conversely, you shouldn't be turning it on and off 20 times a day either.

no, not all the time, if you do you're leaving it open for someone else to tap into it.
, and you'll make it too hot. some people leave it on all day and night, why, i'll never know. if you leave it on all that time you're also wasting energy and a computer uses up a lot of energy. leave it on in the day and turn it off at night or visa versa, whenever you're not using it. good luck

I agree with TalentedChimp (i wonder if chimp really talented and know how to use a PC?) (just kidding..)

If your PC is not a server, then there is no particular reason to turn it on all the time. i would suggest you use hibernate mode, it saves a lot of energy. search in windows help and support for more information on how to use it. best of luck to you!

there is no need to leave a home computer on all the time...use it and when you are done and not going back to it for a few hours, shut it off and give it a rest...the fan gets overworked as it heats and has to cool more often...plus the waste of electricity...so you can shut it off with no problems...

no its a waste of energy. A computer on for 2 hours burns more energy then a treadmill on full speed for an hour

Depends. Are you using your comp constantly throughout the day? If not, why waste all that energy?
