Let's start right off with the truth. Lulu is NOT FREE... You have to pay for all kinds of extras and they amount to at least $600 dollars. And once a self publisher has your name and e mail or phone number, they will hound you big time. It is a very hard sell business. They also send people to forums to write posts praising them - called sockpuppets. Don't believe them for one minute.

It is self publishing - or what used to be called Vanity Publishing. It is for people who are unable to get their books accepted by traditional publishers and want to see their names in print. You get just what you pay for - a box of books you can show people. Your books are NOT sold in stores. Bookshelves are where the action is in publishing. If your book is not in a store, it will not sell.

The average self publisher sells around 100 copies. It costs you more to promote it than you will earn in royalties. It is the black hole of publishing. I believe 9 self published books have gone on to the bestseller list. The rest ended up costing their authors money.

They are low quality printing with low quality covers. They are POD - Print on Demand. That means if someone orders a copy of your book, they print one for them. Unless people KNOW about your book, they aren't going to do that. How many self publishers have tried coming here and begging people to order their books? A LOT.

If you consider your book to be good, you owe it to yourself and your manuscript to spend at least one year trying to publish traditionally before giving in to vanity publishing. Maybe longer. You put work and effort into it - is it worth it to sell 100 copies? Hardly.

I have starred a lot of great Q and A on publishing and writing. You can access them on my profile. Whenever I see new ones, I add them. You can print them out and build yourself up a nice little guide to publishing with great information. You will learn a lot regarding self publishing and traditional publishing. Check them out.
