On a sunny day or brightly lit field at night, there is a glare. The black does reduce the glare into your eyes.

on sunny days, it blocks the light from reflecting into the player's eyes...

i personally used it for intimidation...if you can put on an image, much like pro wrestlers do (i know...lame comparison, but its true...) then you have a psychological advantage over your opponent...

that and when i took my helmet off and went nutz on the sideline, it pumped up the crowd.

They are used to block the sun. When the sun hits their cheeks, it won't reflect into their eyes. They're like mini sunglasses.
