You grew up in a ghetto where drug use and violence were all around you. Your parents were never married, and your mother (who you live with) has never held down a proper job. Maybe some of your siblings are in prison. Maybe you've been in prison. The police routinely harass you and your neighbors. The school you went to was underfunded, and no one you know has ever been to college. You often don't have enough to eat, and what you do eat is not nutritionally adequate. Because of your education, it's difficult to find any job at all. If you do find a job, it pays so little that you're better off staying on public benefits.
Blaming the poor for being the poor is the kind of stuff that conservatives tell themselves so they can sleep at night on their big piles of money.

First of all, being "poor" is not always a choice for everybody. So I think you are way out of line. Money, material things and status is not what life is all about. How would you define "poor". If a person has their life, health and strength, they can pay their bills, they have a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs and shoes on their feet, those are the basics and they should be thankful. Everyone should try to advance and progress in life, however, they shouldn't let the material things allow them to lose focus on what they should be doing. Are you upper class? I would much rather be poor and happy than rich, ignorant and unhappy. There are people out there that don't want to do better in life. They have the ability to do better but they won't. Now that's one thing. But there are so many out there that can barely make ends meet. They don't have an education. They don't have the knowledge. They don't have support. Let's help those people instead of knocking them down.

What would you like them to do? Rob a bank to stop being poor? Many poor people have handicaps - such as an inadequate education, poor health, developmental problems, or in some cases, just plain bad luck. But the sad fact is that many poor people work very hard - they just haven't been able to make their efforts pay or, for whatever reason.
It's easy to look at someone who lives on the street and say, "Why doesn't he get a job?" but when you live on the street, you don't have nice clean clothes to wear. You don't have a place to shower every morning, and you can't get a haircut. Even if you apply for a job, where does the employer contact you if you don't have a permanent address or a telephone?

never assume that all poor are illiterate. some have college
degrees and others some college. some don't come from
the ghettoes nor are they country hicks. i know of a couple
that ended up on the streets because their kid ran up a
extensive porn bill. some are poor because of someone
elses stupity. dead beat dads for instance. some can't
get out because if you make $1 too much you lose all
the state benefits. you need to ask yourself this : if i was
poor, how would i handle it. and no, suicide isn't the answer
either. by the way to keep from being poor there must be
jobs or your parents have to be filthy rich. some choice.

Whoa! Hold on a minute! You think people "choose" to stay poor!? Think again! They get into situations that are beyond their control! Like, the gas bill is 300 dollars in the winter, and they are working for 6 bucks an hour, yeah right! Hey, they are working. And, before you say, well, they need a better job, what if you went to the store, and there was no one there to check out your groceries, or to the gas station, and no attendant there, or to the clothing store and no person there to check your stuff out...etc, etc, etc.........This country takes all kinds of people to make it work. And, some people have no way of paying for college. Which, I don't think is necessary to get a good job by the way. So, some of the people in this country have to work for the lesser amounts. And try like hell to get by. But, when crap comes to crap, we can survive better that alot. Because we KNOW the difference of what we NEED vs what we WANT. Well, I could go on more, but I think you get the gist of what I've stated.

Why because the rate of pay sucks. Try supporting a family on barley 30k a year. The rich stays rich and the poor stay poor. Its easy for you to cast judgment when your hand is in mommy and daddy's pocket. When your grow up with parents who are just getting by your less likely to go to a big time college and be given jobs that your parents or parents friend who own a company. My friend I don't choose to nickle and dime my life but you can't change things over night.

Money, is not ignorant, name calling is what is ignorant! Poor people are poor because they either want to be, or they won't make the effort or sacrifice it takes to pull yourself out of the gutter! The education is there, the resources are there, the jobs are there, you just have to be willing to work, and make an effort!

Are you in a position to help someone step up to your level? And did you? Are you doing anything constructive to help stop the poverty cycle such as being a mentor or do you just sit in judgment?
BTW, the word "try" has a built-in failure component.
