Yuccas thrive on neglect, sun, drought, poor soil, but so do: Rose Campion, Sedum & sempervivum, Rugosa Rose, Bachelors Buttons, Yarrow, Shasta Daisies, Rudbeckia, Verbena Bonariensis, Russian Sage, all the Sages, and many herbs.
Don't forget your Spring bulbs! They love hot, dry beds all Summer. No maintenance needed, just occasional weeding.

If you are going for the foliage look try Zebra grass for a delicate contrast. Oehme and van Sweden both use yuccas and grass in their designs. Their wonderful book 'Bold Romantic Gardens' shows yuccas combined with 1)Ceratostigma, Coreopsis and Sedums
2)Calamagrostis grass

4)Sedum 'A.J.', Molinia arundinacae 'Windspiel', and Miscanthus sinensis purpurascens.
