New people just moved into the house next door. They are black. I've seen them. All the vehicles have the big chrome wheels, they seem to prefer the "sagging" look and doo-rags and they seem to have that scowl you sometimes see black people wear (not all, but too many still). But I like to be a good neighbor. If I go just on what I've seen so far, they will not appreciate me coming over to introduce myself. Of course, I know it's stereotyping, but hey...they fit the stereotypes to a T. Anyway, should I say hello or should I just keep my distance and wait for them to introduce themselves? Will they introduce themselves? I only ask because none of the other black families around here has ever made the first move. I always have been the one. My out of town visitors felt a little intimidated when they got out of the car because the new neighbors were staring but didn't speak, wave or smile at all. I'm told they all had the 50-cent look, which didn't help. What to do?

Ok, I am an African-American female, married, got 2 kids, an Army wife....that being said I grew up in the country, but I have been in the projects and the hood, I don't act ghetto, black, or hood at all, I am educated and act accordingly, yet I don't look down on people of my race who do dress in the hip hop style, talk slang, or "act black", they are still people too. I will not hurt you to go and introduce yourself to them as a neighbor, you never know, those people may not have ever met another black person who dresses nice, have nice things, etc, and they may look at you as an example of how their life should be. So don't judge or stereotype them, just go an speak, they won't hurt you unless you do something to them, and that goes for any race.

Do they wear colors? You are pretty safe if they dont weaar colors. I would just be slight about it at first. Wave to them or maybe go over and ask them if you can borrow a lawn mower cause yours is "broke" just to get what kind of people they are. Sounds like they are kids who like to do kid stuff and act all tough, everyone has a soft side, you just have to find it.
