I'm 24. I love to go out hear live music, and have a few cocktails. I'll go to a reggae bar, bluegrass, techno, hip hop, whatever, but one thing is the same in every place.

People my age do not know how to dance.

Aside from the vague grinding and thrusting made popular by MTV, there's not a lot going on. I'm no professional, but i move to the music, listen to it, and like to have a little space to work with, and it seems impossibly out if place. Should I want to dance with a pretty girl it's usually even worse. her rump goes directly to my crotch and I'm suppose to.... what? bump it? (don't get me wrong, me love the ladies)

i don't expect a waltz, but this sloppy crowd grunting and thrusting is pitiful and boring. so what's up?

I think its mostly because true dance requires listening to and sharing with a partner. Most people today seem far more interested in having everything be all about them and their immediate gratification. Partnered dance is about respect and a dialogue of shared ideas based on a certain set of learned skills or steps.

Now that the skills are somewhat obscure and take some work to find and practice, no one's willing to invest the time, so they grind to get some lowest common denominator self-satisfaction and to heck with anyone else.

You will have to start a new trend. Smart women love men who can do all of the classic dances. Get your friends interested in "So You Think You Can Dance?" I am speaking from 58 years on this earth, and I would say with the sexual freedom came a lack of interest in dancing the seductive classic dances, as there doesn't seem to be a need to seduce the woman of your choice. It is really sad as I doubt that most of the young girls are really enjoying sex because there isn't any build up to it. LOL I guess I am generalizing here, but from what I have seen and heard while watching TV shows is appalling. O.k. I had better close now as I am about to get into a diatribe about what I see going wrong with todays youth. Personally if I had anything to do with moving along the sexual revolution, I apologize. Good old fashioned romance was pretty good foreplay!

Most young people practice any dance moves from music videos and friends. Look at what's shown in those videos these days: a lot of bumping and grinding or just plain jumping up and down. I grew up in the 80's where people knew how to dance. There were more choreographers as well and the videos showed actual dancers and not a whole lot of bumping and grinding.

Unfortunately, many of those choreographers are aging, and many parents my age and older who learned those moves aren't teaching them to their kids. However, history does repeat itself and I have seen some of the dance moves I grew up with. It looks like they're trying to bring back breakdancing (or street dancing as it used to be called). And last night when I saw High School Musical 2 with my daughter, I could have sworn Michael Jackson choreographed some of the dances. Many of his older moves were used.

But I know where you're coming from. I have a 13yo son who can't dance to save his life. But, he's copying what he sees as well. Pray things change soon. :)

I'm 14 and know what you mean (i don't go to clubs or anything though). The only kind of "dancing" that goes on at my school dances is grinding. I mean come on, everyone at those dances are ages 12-15. I think they're a little to young to be doing that. Meanwhile the teacher chaperones don't care (even though they freak out if my boyfriend hugs me when i get to school in the morning). they're too busy stopping me from breaking (which is actual dancing as opposed to what else is going on) just because a circle gets formed around me and occasionally turns into some stupid mosh pit. i mean it's not like i started dancing to form a mosh pit, i just prefer more tasteful dancing. So i know how you feel, i like to actually dance and it stinks when no one else wants to. so don't feel bad it's not just your generation that can't dance. =]

True, most males seem like they don't want to even know how to dance. If I'm dancing I want the guy to dance too. Not just stand their while I'm doing all the dancing. Besides I think guys that grind or thrust do it because THEY CAN'T DANCE LOL!!!

What bothers me is that if I decided to go into an American club, the dancing would be minimal compared to the whole being hit on and gyrated against thing. -_-

I'm with you. I love to dance, and just want to do so without being touched everywhere. I hear that in Europe, the dance clubs there are for dancing, not for dry humping on a dance floor whilst intoxicated. :P

I think we need to bring back dancing to PE classes again. I'm not that old and we took dance in gym and we all knew how to dance.
