I got a part-time job at wal-mart a week ago. After 4 days as a new cashier I quit today. After hearing some serious cashier horror stories, I decided that I didn't want to deal with all the drama. Do you think I made the right choice??? Although, I do need some extra money, I thought that it just wasn't worth it. One of the CSM's (customer service managers) told the cashiers that a man wanted to return a bee-bee gun, but the barcode wasn't the same. He was denied the return. He then returned with blood all over his face & hands and said he was bleeding from the BEHIND...he then held the bee-bee gun to the CSM. THe police came, but the man escaped. The customers were completely stunned. The cashiers were scared. I was like...this is ridiculous. I THINK I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. What do you guys think???

I worked for retail for a year and a half. It is not usually as scary as the manager let on. He was defiantly not being a very good, or professional manager! The kind of thing he was talking about it rare. Especially in a store as large and populated as Wall-mart. Anywhere you work with people there will be a risk of someone really crazy coming in. There is also about the same risk that you could get hit by a truck while walking across the street. You can't let "what ifs" stand in the way of doing everyday things like going to work.

Now that you quit, there is not much you can do. I recommend not mentioning that you worked at wall-mart at all on future applications. It doesn't look good for you to have quit so quickly!

I think you made a poor choice - there are lots of jobs with drama, this is an unusual case. Retail is filled with horror stories - people who return things that are nasty, or steal and try to return with a different receipt - it's one of the issues of being in retail.

The man in your story was obviously deranged, but he could have bought anything from any store and pulled the same game - he is the problem, not Wal-Mart.

In addition, now that you have shown you can't keep a job for more than 4 days, it will show up as an uncommitted employee, and might hurt you in your next job hunt.

I work in retail and, let me tell you, it's always an adventure! Especially if you work the overnight shift and you get the drunks and druggies in.

I could write a book of all the idiots I've dealt with. All the stupid people I've pissed off, just because I won't do stuff like return their ipod 6 months after they bought it.

I've only been threatened three times in 5 years. All three times were by stupid people that didn't have the guts to follow through when I told them to try it.

I still love my job. The 'crazies' keep things a little more interesting for me. I guess if I find myself in the path of any serious harm, I'm giving the psyco whatever the heck they want to get them out of the store and away from people!

You made the right choice!

my friend worked for them for 4 years started as a cashier too, he ended up as a pharmacy tech. Was pretty happy and was pursuing a career in the pharmacy and planning to go to pharmacy school. However, when a new pharmacist came in with in 4 months he was fired. The new Pharmacist didn't like him and had him fired for no reason.

Lots of crzy things happend while he was there over 4 years...so always bomb threats coming in too he said. I think he made the right decision he's definately happier these days and being paid more.

You'll get paid more somewhere else. They are the lowest paying of them all.

I think you should have stuck it out.

That sounds like an extreme story....Is it even true? If it is, things like that don't happen very often and the odds of it happening to you are very slim.

When you work with the public - i.e. waiting tables, working as a cashier....you're going to have some drama.

I would not have quit over someone elses experience. You should have stuck it out and gave it some time to see if the job was for you.

I worked at Lowe's for 3 years. I denied a return on a customer's sump pump because it obviously had been used for quite some time. The customer walked out the door, stopped, turned around, and threw the pump back in through the doors at me. I just shrugged it off as another crazy incident and went on with my day.

Quitting is both good and bad. It makes a definite black mark on your job history, but it also taught you that you are not cut out for retail work. Learn your lesson here and move on.

Just don't show up to work. You can call them and inform them that due to their inability to meet your scheduling requests, you are refusing to meet their scheduling requests. Or, go in, punch in, and then have a long drawn out conversation with the manager telling him you quit. That way, you get paid for the time (they can't withhold pay for time worked).

If you want a decent paycheck Wal-Mart ain't the place to work. And no, it was never a really safe place.
You were smart.

You are working retail. Try something else like working in a distribution or manufacturing facility.
