Where may I find, generic, optical drive, diagnostic software ?

I am searching for bootable media, capable of thoroughly testing an optical drive. I would prefer it to be independent of drive manufacture, and operating system.

Micro 2000 is indeed the one, although it will give it on a bootable USB, which is better, since your drive may not work at all anymore and you want to know why ;-)

From memory, Micro2000 diagnostics will do that for you
