would this 7800 be a faster card because it has 64 bit texture filtering. or does that not really matter. i think the 7900gs would be faster but i just wanted to check . thanks

Of those two cards, the 7900GS is faster, see the head-to-head benchmarks below.

In that general price range, the Radeon X1950 Pro does in fact beat all challengers for the AGP crown.

If you're only looking at Nvidia cards, probably grab the 7600GT, it's got shader model 3.0

The 7900gs is much faster.
However, the ATI X1950 Pro is even better than the 7900gs for around the same price. The x1950 Pro is a step up from the x1950 GT, and is currently hailed as the best bang for your buck video card. Much better value!

If you are bent on getting an nvidia card, get the new 8600 gts again for around the same price but perhaps a tiny less performance. You will be able to play dx10 games with the 8600, which is an advantage over the cards mentioned above.

7900GS would still be FASTER in benchmarks and actual games. It has more number of shaders, higher core/memory clock speeds and 30% higher memory bandwidth.

newegg.com, radeon x1900 series. you cant go wrong. and make sure the card is 128-bit or higher. the x1950gt is 256-bit. awesome visuals
