An infinite number of times. By chance humans evolved this time.

Actually, we can only account for one time. And that's based on the positions and the relative motion of the galaxies. Since those of us who were around at the time neither confirm nor deny it even happened, even that one is open to debate. But science is working on that right now.

If you ask a religious dogmatist, you will likely hear some other theory... depending upon which religious dogma the profess to follow. But unlike science, they deny the need to prove anything. You just have to believe their version of "the truth," or you're damned.

Personally, I don't know. I find it hard to believe that this is the first iteration. I also find it hard to believe that this is first evolutionary process that's resulted in something like humanity. If thisis the first iteration, than the theory of a pulsating universe may be false. That would mean that eventually the universe will be a very dark place witn all the energy expended... cold and lifeless. Sorry, I don't like that picture. But when it gets to that point, I guess I won't care much either way.

The answer to that is beyond me but I'll use my gut instinct which is probably wrong. I feel that the big bang was a one time thing and the theory that all matter will collapse back together and form another big bang is rather odd if you think about it. Where in the universe do you see such behavior? I feel that matter will continue expanding outward into the vastness of space forever. Eventually one of two things will happen. Either new stars will form and the life cycle will continue or when all stars die out the universe will be a wasteland of matter w/o the possibility to continue forming life. Of course that would be trillions of years from now. Who knows.

We can only say that the Universe in which we currently live has had one Big Bang. Study ekpyrotic theory and you'll find that there have been unnumerable (Not innumerable) recurrences of the Big Bang throughout time. Since everything was first destroyed and then restarted, we have no record of how many times it has occurred.

The Big bang Theory tries to expalin the Creation of the Universe. It is not the only Theory of Creation .Nevertheless Those theories all imply that Creation was a one shot Event.

The Big bang Theory alludes that the Universe was born from the Nucleous of a geometrical volume of space. Hence the Universe , according to the theory, was created from the inside of that particular geometrical volume of space.
The theory appears a little bit scientifically primitive.

The reallity of Creation is more plausible indicating that a Big Bang did not take place at all.
But rather that the Universe was Created from the outside of that geometrical space.
Hence the Universe was more likely Created from the Outside in ,rather than Inside Out.

Theories are good attempts to explain reality ,but all in all ,they are still Theory.
As it was once said ; "Believe it or not".

Its very vely simple.

At least once.

You have to keep in mind that the Big Bang theory is, by definition, the earliest known event in the universe. Before that event, the universe was too hot and dense for us to be able to tell what was going on. Until we get more information, any attempt to answer what came before the Big Bang is pure speculation.

Hi. I think we may be in an infinite cycle of Big Bangs. This one we sense, so we think it is unique. May be many (infinitely) more and some may be occurring right now.

In this universe? Once, of course. The universe is expanding and becoming more and more entropic, so all of the matter re-condensing would be impossible.

once
all current data shows that the universe will NOT collapse again. it will expand into a cold dark empty place.

We have scientific evidence to support that it has happened once. So that's my belief.
