Jealousy usually... because that person has something they want.. or a feeling they can't find.
if someone did that to me... i'd have to cut them out of my life.

The times it has happened to me have mostly been out of the other person's jealousy; or perceived inadequacy of her own self. I have not been lied to by men the way the women have!
They usually gain a sense of "getting back" at you or a situation. Especially where a man is concerned!
One who lies to me is not a friend. The relationship falls to the side of the road.
This is probably why I have so few "friends" and tons of acquaintances!!! :) Great question!!! Nana

It's not worth keeping that friendship. If the only things you're talking about with your friend are the reasons behind his/her lies, it's time to end it. Sometimes it's lying, sometimes it's downright rudeness, but it doesn't matter what it is if it's making you unhappy. Just say goodbye to the "friend" and tell him/her that you don't have the energy to try to save a friendship they're trying to ruin.

People throw spanners in the works because they see holes and want them blocked so that they can play havok on the efforts of someone else. Playing on someone else is much easier then playing with your own. It is profitable business too. Jealousy is a mean factor. Spanners are thrown by those higher in the knowledge chain and they are looking out for number one..even if they don't admit it..they are constantly busy building schemes and destruction is their aim. They do not give up until their calls or demands are met. They use all means possible..cut off water then turn it on to drown the house, turn off electricity outside, unplug the cabling preventing viewing pleasures, blow up the speakers so that you cannot and may not listen to your favourite stuff, put flower food in your coffee and use sweetner to disguise the fact that it is there, let down all the cars tyres so that you cannot possibly use the car, hide your wallet, steal your phone or tap into it and listen in on everything you call about, receive letters addressed to you and keep them for themselves and say there was nothing for you, forge your signature and steal your identity to their own ends and you have nothing more to say, pay a whore to take an interest in you and then deny the whole thing as you get a dose of the clap and a bill for the rest of your life. Why they do this? To insist that they do own you and do get the better of you..though does that make you love them more? Does this bring people together or does the spanner method really work? If it doesn't work then more severe items will disappear from your wardrobe, clothes go missing, shoes are thrown away and personla items such as records, cds are all scratched and allowance is cut-off by threats from lawyers and social service peersonnel. This is not a love thing it is there because they can do it and do all to prove a point that they can.

People usually lie because they have low self esteem.
Doing so to ruin a friendship indicates jealousy .
About the friend who tells you about the lies-depends on their motive .
If they did it as a friend who wants me to know whats going on ,I'd appreciate that .I value truth.
If they did it to stir up more mischief I would ask myself why I have this person as a friend.

Some people have got sad little lives and have to do this to make their lives interesting. Others do it because it take the attention off them and makes them look good, while others do it because they are jealous.

If you mean that a "friend" has told you something nasty (lies)about your partner in order to cause you grief... Then they are no friend.
Either they are jealous of the closeness of your relationship, or they want your partner for themselves, either way they are poison to you, and not to be trusted
