one, unless there is a penalty on the defense.

You leave yourself open to a variety of answers because you are so vague in your question.
You only get one attempt per try. In other words if your team is at 4th down and 7 yards to go for the first down and you are on the opponents 20 yard line, you would only get one attempt for that drive.
Now depending on how many drives you have to score, if you are withing fieldgoal range then again you only get one try per attempt.
So it doesn't really depend on the game as much as it does your team sucking an not being able to get the ball into the end zone by running it in or passing for the TD.

You get 1 attempt unless the defense has a penalty against them. Then you can try again or decline it and take the points.

We all have seen teams try for the FG on third down. I would assume that meant if they missed it they would have fourth down to try it again. So I would say you could try it on any down and keep trying till you get it or run out of downs.

Uh...You have 4 downs with which to try to score...whether you want to try a TD or FG on 4th down is the question...
Assuming you mean a FG on 4th down, its one chance at a FG...
