Your nothingness just had a proof.
Scientist had discovered a big hole. Inside there, there is big void of space, no dark energy, no dark mass, no stars,no galaxies, completely nothing.

August 23, 2007: Astronomers Find Enormous Hole in the Universe. Astronomers have found an enormous hole in the Universe, nearly a billion light-years across, empty of both normal matter such as stars, galaxies, and gas, and the mysterious, unseen "dark matter." While earlier studies have shown holes, or voids, in the large-scale structure of the Universe, this new discovery dwarfs them all.

That is the question that Physics has no explanation.
Space has a Granular structure in the form of a sphere.
However if you fill up all these spheres into a cube ,the spheres would only occupy 52.35 per cent ot the total space of the Cube.
So if Universal space is structured with all these little spheres then what is in between them.?
This implies that in between the space structure there must exist another substance which we cannot explain.
Mass is structured as a mixture of space substance. Today Cosmologists imply that this space substance is dark matter.
Dark Matter had been postulated by the Science of ancient Greece by a man whose name is Democritus. He postulated that there must exist in space a granular substance that He called atoms.
Today the atoms refers to a mass structure not a granular space structure.
So in modern terms the word atom is a misnomer.Because in an atomic bomb ,the atom is divisible.
The word The Nothing was used in the Bible which alludes to the void . that means the absence of mass structures.
However the Content of the nothing was referred in Genesis Chapter one of the Holy Bible as a Subtance of Space.
The Greek called it the AETHER. The Chinesse called it the " CHI "and ancient Chinese wisdom stated that nothing can exist without the CHI.
So the Connotation of the "nothing" is modern thinking implies emptiness. But in reality the so called "nothing "is something.
The fact is that we are really unable to define zero. As we can keep dividing mass structure and space structure, but are never able to reach zero.
Its very vely simple.

Some may answer that 'nothing' is a vacuum with no matter. However, even the best vacuum in space may still have what is called 'dark energy'.
True nothingness is the absence of anything you can conceive of (exept the absence of nothingness)

From the physical point of view if you take away matter you have vacuum, that under recent theretical physics is full of energy and there are various level of vacuum.
however removing space or spacetime fabric you have nothing.
For a definition of nothing I suggest you to read Parmenides a philosopher that 2500 years ago asked himself the same question, "what is nothing".

i agree with websnark but isnt "the absence of nothingness" still something? meaning there is no such thing as nothingness because any form of anything whether it be there or not is still something....

Hi. You are still left with 'vacuum energy' and the inevitable quantum phenomenon of virtual particles.
