well, yes, it's a huge adrenalin rush to go 100 mph. I've done it in a few cars, if the speedometer is to be believed. Although many of the older cars of the '50's and 60's and 70's may not have had accurate readings at that speed, due to calibration errors, and needle bouncing. I "believe" I've done it in a 1964 Impala, my 1957 Chevy would "almost" make it, I could squeeze it up to around 97, but it would be missing, probably points were bouncing. My 1974 AMC Gremlin I got to 94 downhill slightly, never got it over 100. I may have had the '66 Chevy Bel air over 100 at one time, too. I am not sure about my VW beetle, or my 73 Chevelle, I may have tried in those cars, but I truly don't remember. My 1979 Pacer did 95 flat out, and I think my '70 Javelin did high 90's as well. It's COOKIN'! You have to be ever watchful when going that fast, as any slight problem will be magnified due to high speed. But it IS fun to do!

Most modern cars are capable of doing 100MPH perfectly safely today, in fact you will have more control at 100MPH in a modern Mondeo than doing 70MPH in a 1960's Aston Martin DB5. So it's not even slightly scary. The reason it's not a good idea is because cars took 240Ft to break from 60-0 in those days, compared to a more realistic 150Ft today, but they had much less traffic around them, therefore it was less important to make a rapid stop.

I did 100 in an Austen Westminster, in the days before seat-belts and speed limits, very exciting on crossplys. Latterly when I had a Peugeot 405 and the speed used to creep up because it was a quieter car than my previous one.

I have done a 175 on a 1100 gixer. You get tunnel vision as the speed only allows you to focus up ahead. I enjoyed doing **** like that at the time but I now drive a Land Rover and rarely go over 50.
I guess i am getting old 'eh?

Used to do it many years ago on an ancient British bike (AJS). It was a Sunday afternoon ritual on a long straight near here.
Terrifies me now when I think about it, non-grip tyres, non-existent brakes and a cork helmet! It didn't then, we were young and daft, I suppose. Nowadays I'm old and daft, and the car will easily achieve that figure quite routinely if I'm not paying attention.

i notice this is all men or non drivers but as a woman who doesnt like to hang about why on earth is it scary to look. i have only got an r reg 1.6 escort but once on the motorway its amazing how it creeps up on you, before you know it you glance at the speedo and its on the 100+ and there are still people whizzing past like you arent moving.

been up to 130 in my vauxhall calibra on motorways, it doesnt really seem that fast to be honest, its not as if you're doing zero and then suddenly the landscape is a blur past you and you have to manouvre around obstacles, its 50 metres per second, give or take, so if you can see more than 500 metres ahead, thats 9 seconds to react to whatever's coming up, plenty of time.

I was 17 and in a Chevy Lumina, lol. 115mpg and the governor shut my car down. Why was I going so fast? I was late to get home. Just stupid.
Anyhow, I looked down at the speedometer, but it was WAY too fast. One car in front of me and I would have wrecked out.

I don't drive, but I was in my ex boyfriend's borrowed Peugeot 206 GTI 180 (180 breakhorse power that is) and we raced a Porsche on the North Circular and won.
I was crapping my pants and had to put my seatbelt on because I did fear for my life. I think we were going about 120-140mph.

120mph on the M1 in a Mk9 Jaguar (before the 70mph speed limit of course) Nice smooth ride, but I could see the fuel gauge going down.
130mph on Brands Hatch circuit in a Lotus Cortina. Invigorating.
70mph (or slightly over!) on the A2 in a Singer Chamois. Terrifying - knowing you're dead if you crash them above 20mph.
