When the big bang happened, did space expand with it? Or was space always there and the big bang exploded into it?

Hi. Good question. It used to be called the 'ether' and was thought to be some thing like a medium. Now we think of it as tied into the other dimensions of space/time. During a very tiny fraction of a second it looks like the 'fabric' had to expand faster than light. Not sure I buy that.

The fabric of Space was understood by Einstein as the Aether. See His lecture in 1920 at the university of Leipzig.
As far as the Big Bang theory is concerned it it not exactly believable , it opens so many doubts ,as it is a very primitive Theory.
Today the Aether substance of space is referred to as Dark matter of the Universe.Dark matter composes the Structure of Space.
See my previous answers. about dark matter.

Its very vely simple
