I agree people and the media are being way too harsh. Don't get me wrong, dogfighting is repulsive, but if it is so terrible, why wasn't it given this attention 5 months ago or a 1 ago ? Its a shame that a crime like this only gets attention when someone famous is accused. I watch shows like Nancy Grace a lot, and I've only seen one show dealing with dogfighting, and this was a while back. Not to mention, I think Nancy is a hypocrite, I remember on one show were she made it seem that all pitbulls are " the devils" and are "naturally vicious" when two mauled a 6 year old boy in Indiana, and now pitbulls are the "sweetest thing" in the world. Also it seems that Vick is getting the brute of the "negative reaction", last time I checked three other guys plead guilty, nothing is being said about them. Overall, I hope this makes Vick a better person, whether he plays in the NFL or not! The real issues at hand is that there are still people like John Couey in our communities, who kidnapped, raped, and then buried alive a 9 year old girl. That's the REAL issue!

Two problems with that argument.
1) anyone that is caught dogfighting is prosecuted and sent to jail if they are convicted, just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean that people who torture their dogs aren't arrested and prosecuted.
2) as far as the NFL punishment is concerned, Vick financed an illegal operation that included gambling, which is a MAJOR violation of his contract with the Falcons and the NFL. He also lied directly to the Commissioner's face, and to the face of the Falcon's owner.
The only difference between what is happening to Vick and what would happen to a normal person that is caught dogfighting is that this case happens to be national news because of Vick's status as a NFL quarterback. That is the only difference.
unbeaten, while I agree with your opinion, Pete Rose is not the best example to use here, he bet on baseball games directly, Vick financed an illegal gambling operation that had nothing to do with the sport that he participated in. Taken alone, that's probably worth a 2 year ban, but add in all the other things that he did, then he should be banned for life.

Nope.
Think you will find that Vick got a cushier deal than his not so rich cohorts. Maybe you should stop overracting to all the hype, and get the facts of the matter.
Lower profile means you don't usually get to make the nice pleas. And those who do it "everyday" most assuredly get the time when they get busted. They just don't get the sympathy of every bleeding heart out there.
I am gonna steal something from DogsRspcl, and hope he don't get mad:
Here's a shoe on the other paw story: How would you like to be one of Vick's pit bulls that just arrived at his kennels, being choke-chained for not attacking a little dog used as training bait (that has his mouth taped shut and is helpless). Then when you finally learn that you will be choked to death if you don't chew the throat out of the little dog -you rip up it's body and EAT it because that's all you get to eat! Then, what is your reward...You have to fight FIERCE "teeth gouging" pit bulls over and over again and even though your face is hanging and half chewed off - you must win or DIE!, because If you lose and don't die, you will have a slow "drowning" death - where you will be weighted down and held under water while the powerful hands of man (whom you trusted) hold your nose and mouth and there is no air and there is no hope and there is no help and your innocent life is slowing fading and your legs are kicking and flailing, all the while to the cheers of the spectators for their entertainment jollies.
That's torture my friend. Psychologists say these people are dangerous to humans as they have been desensitized and have no compassion. Anyone that makes an excuse (NAACP & Vick fans) for inhumane treatment of animals are just as sick, just as sadistic, and just as cruel and just as dangerous!
*Dogsrspcl, thanks for the elegant post. Again I hope you don't mind my reprinting it, But I could never say it so well.
Does it still sound like he is getting too harsh a sentence?
If so, lady I don't ever want to let you around my pets.
* Jaelee.....actually, I don't believe I mentioned race anywhere in this post. Well except for in the last sentence. And by my count only 4, out of 24, even mentioned it. (1 in a most self-serving manner, true), so I don't think that "ALL" of us have done so. It is the nature of the crime that is henious.

I don't think so.
Think about this: How often do we hear about some kid getting mauled by a pit bull or some other dog? Some people will yell about banning these dogs but usually we end up deciding it isn't the dog, it's people who raise these dogs to be mean and aggressive.
THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Not just dog fighting but a whole subculture of people breeding and training dogs to be killers. And they sometimes end up killing people.
I'm not saying that Michael Vick is responsible for some kid getting mauled. But I would bet you money that you wouldn't have to go too many degrees of separation to find some kid who did get mauled by a fighting dog.
It's the same as financing gun runners in crime ridden areas. You aren't the one killing people but you are contributing mightily.

Why does everything have to turn to a racial thing? Mr. Cantgetitright has the correct name. You are wrong. Vick is a cruel and inhumane man when it comes to animals. He committed a crime and has to pay the price. Question for you Mr. Cantgetitright: Why are you turning the question into a racial thing? The question didn't concern race, it concerned how he was being treated versus his financial situation. And check your history, 30 years ago was the 70's and you probably weren't around then. Try the 50's, early 60's, and watch Mississippi Burning and Glory. Yeah, us white devils, each and everyone of us is prejudice, ***** hanging, slave owning, keep the black man down race, right? Wrong. I judge people by the way they act, not by color. And from your comments, I would have nothing to do with you.

If you believe this, you need to be careful of men you date.
Please think more of yourself then to excuse sadistic men.

Actually I think they are being quite lenient on him. If it were me dishing out the punishment, I would have him hung by the family jewels for 24 hours (so he can feel some of the pain he caused the dogs), fine him 25% of his highest annual income, give him 5 years in prison (hard time) and then 5,000 hours of community service with an animal shelter when he gets out.
Any person who seriously mistreats any animal and then dumps them like disposable trash should be heavily punished. Num-nuts did not just mistreat and/or kill one animal, he has been doing this for years and many dogs were involved. There is no excuse for his actions, they are totally cruel and reprehensible.

Are you for real? I am scared to think anyone could share your
opinion. Pete Rose was banned from MLB for life for gambling alone. Mike Vick has admitted to that and the dog fighting. His act in this malicious treatment to defenseless dogs in incomprehensible. His disregard for mans best friend is evil and money has got nothing to do with anything!

Most people do NOT drown, starve, electrocute, hang, drown, fight, and murder dogs EVERYDAY. If you or people you know do this everyday, you need to seek help. How could you be so stupid? But then, it stands to reason, those who abuse animals are usually mentally handicapped.
Picking on him because he has money? There are many people in the US who have money that have yet to be tried for animal abuse and cruelty.
You should be ashamed of yourself. Your sympathy is misguided and your logic is terribly flawed.

Pete Rose was banned for life from baseball just for gambling. He did not abuse an animal that trusted him. And him being black has nothing to do with it . F*** the NAACP.
