Short answer, no it is not true. The cops will catch you. To go faster than 180KPH on the Shutoko is very difficult. Even at 0300 there are many other vehicles on the road. The highway patrol may not chase you, but rather radio ahead and have multiple cars waiting for you. Often times, the highway patrol has crackdowns on the midnight runners who try and drive the C1 loop late at night.

There is always so much traffic, I don't see how anyone could get to 180 kph and maintain that speed anyway......and yes they will find other ways to catch you (as someone said camera zooms in on your plate #) but I know one thing for sure...

DON'T CROSS THE SOLID LINE BETWEEN LANES!

I have gotten pulled over numerous times for this because I had to get over into the turning lane or to continue straight if I was in the wrong lane...

One time I started to cross right before the line went dotted again anyway...I'm talking INCHES here....and I still got pulled over. I didn't realize it was such a big deal in Japan.

The movie you're talking about is a fantasy, much of it filmed in LA. This question has been asked over and over. And you'd be hard pressed to be able to go that fast anywhere in Tokyo. No, it's not true. The police there don't play games.

No it's true that they won't chase you by car. Not to worry they have cameras on the expressway and can zoom in on your tag number and get you later on.

The speed cameras just take a picture of your license plate and then you get a summons in the mail.
