Filter sand should normally be changed every 3-5 years. After a while, the sharp edges on the sand wear smooth (similar to rocks at the bottom of a stream) and lose some of their ability to catch debris. Changing it every year or more often than that shouldn't be necessary.
There are filter sand cleaners available that would be a good idea to use at the end of each season, but it's not necessary to change the sand that often. (no harm in it, either, just unnecessary work.)
* You can open the filter and add some sand (if you've lost some through backwashing) when starting up each year. Make a note of where the sand level is from the top of the tank when the proper amount of sand is in the tank. *

we change ours about every 3 yrs......u will start to notice it doesnt clean as well after a back wash and stay as clean as it should......

always good to change it once a season. if you backwash frequently, you'll be washing some out every time.
