Because in the beginning of the world, a bunch of smart dudes got together and decided how to spell words.
They didn't feel like putting an i in team...those meaniefaces ;)
Later, people would refer to that to correct people that either actually have a sense of humor or people that are too competitive.
(Not really though. I dunno, ask Mirriam-Webster if you want a real answer lol)
