A 23-year-old man with learning difficulties has died in hospital after being "savagely attacked" by a gang of up to five youths.
Brent Martin was found with multiple injuries on Sunderland's Town End Farm estate on Thursday night after reports of a man being beaten up.
He was taken to the city's Royal Hospital, where he died on Saturday.
A woman, a 21-year-old man and three youths, one aged 16 and two aged 17, are being questioned by police.
Mr Martin, described as vulnerable by police, had been the victim of a "sustained and brutal" beating.

you can't get an ASBO for a criminal offence, its a civil order
'slap on the wrist' is not a sentence given out by youth courts.
Cautions don't exist for young people anymore (and would only be given instead of court even if they were still an option.
Can't tell you what might happen
if 1st offence then a referral order
though if serious enough could be custody (likely)

thumbs down for what? Reality? Check out the link if you don't believe me, I don't make the laws.
Oh and for ASBO's check out the anti-social behaviour act - the person below me is right.
edit
sorry if she died it's def custody most likely life, minimum tariff at around 15 years - at least thats what I have see in my experience

These youths are from an obviously depressed back ground. They may not have a Nintendo Wii or Widescreen LCD TV in their bedrooms.
We as a society need to help these cries for helps by providing their families with money for doing nothing at all enabling them to buy these necessary goods. We must let these children know that in this country they can achieve fame and fortune without work or strife. Or that if they want anything in this socialist environment they can just take it from anyone they choose.
By forming clubs or gangs they can take control of their surroundings and the people who live there. Just like our own politicians but on a local scale. Or by using weapons they can rule places as we do Iraq or Afganistan. Fine examples of leadership and achievment.
By not discriminating anyone can become a target. Age race or sex need not play a role. The Human rights of us all can treated equally.

I would imagine that this will be treated as a murder investigation considering the apparent brutality of the attack. If that's the first court appearance, the judge may decide that based on the severity of the case that the two should be tried as adults, and hopefully that is what will happen.
Violence of this nature seems to be so common these days...people can blame computer games, violent films, bad parenting...but honestly I think it's just become "cool" to beat the living you know what out of people for fun.
What should be done is to seriously ramp up the sentences for violent crime, any violent crime. I also think that the death penalty should be an option in cases of extreme brutality. Beating someone to death is probably a lot less "cool" if you run the risk of being put to death yourself.

At the risk of sounding dumb.....Please explain to me what a YOB is, and what is ASBO?
If that had happened here (USA), the youths would be tried as adults, with all the consequences of that rank. That is how it should be. A kid who is allowed to hide behind their youth, and able to say at that age 15, and 17, I am so stupid, I did not know what the heck I was doing is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. They still try that here, most times the judge laughs them out of the courtroom and right into the adult penal system!
Edit: I know to any bleeder (liberal bleeding heart) this might sound a bit heavy handed. In this state (TN, USA) a person over the age of 14 can and has been sentenced to death for their offense. That is the extreme, but this youth was responsible for the deaths of 6 young girls. He is awaiting appeals now, and likely will not be executed until he is 30 years of age. He will be executed at any rate.

That about somes up the state of this country now.
The Police and Government maybe trying to put a spin on this by saying keep things in perspective, but Its out of control. Anyone can see that this is way out of control and as yet the Government / Police don't have an answer.

I don't know what has become of our country. Aren't enough prison places? Release prisoners early? Don't send someone to prison unless its a "serious" crime (???)
No, the answer is to build more prisons and increase the tariffs, let the punishment fit the crime.
I would also say bring back corporal punishment, we are far too soft with these young scumbags. The problem is they know all their rights without being aware of their responsibilities.
What really sickens me is that the politicians all talk tough, but do nothing. yap yap yap.

The law has definitely got to get tougher here, no excuses from social workers and the like. These yobs took a life of an innocent girl, they should repay the debt by spending their lives in jail - and not a luxury suite either. A cell and basic needs catered for, thats it.

Well, first of all I am terribly sorry. I can only say that here, they would probably put them to death. I know that many would say that would be too good for them, however if you believe in eternal torment, then it makes perfect sense.
You also added to my argument about the right to bear arms!

We need to first of all get rid of the PC lunatic left, get rid of the human rights crap [ The only people those rights defend are the scum ] life should mean life in the conditions that Lexy describes, not 10 easy, comfortable years, while their victims lie six feet under.
