I am sure that there have been studies, but I cannot remember any off hand. I would do searches on parenting styles and on living arrangements. I know that a child living in a two parent family with loving parents and moderate discipline has the best chance for a good development. Single parent families where the two parents share responsibilities and maintain a cordial relationship ranks second. Bitterness between parents usually results in problems with relationships and risky behavior.
I have no idea about children living with friends, but many of those situations are complicated by many other factors.
Good luck!
