If cells were not alive, then single celled organisms would not be alive, such as plankton, bacteria, and most protista. If they were not alive, then what would constitute life, since we are made up of cells?

of course they are. cells make up human beings and if human beings are alive, then cells are obviously alive. the cell is the basic structure and unit of life. They can already do the things like reproducing, respiring, have metabolism, homeostasis, etc.

they take in O2, they take in food abd excrete waste, they reproduce that makes it a living organism.
