HMS is regular Royal Navy, HMAV is Her Majesty's Armed Vessel, not Royal Navy, some other service. Privateers and all that.

They aren't Auxiliary, those are known as RFA, Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

HMS(His/Her Majestys Ship) is the modern name for Royal Navy warships. Many years ago they were called HMAV ( His/Her majestys Armed Vessels)

HMAV are not in use anymore .they were used by the british army and the HMS is being used by the royal navy

HMAV are Axillary vessals. Supply ships and landing craft. Alot operated by the Royal Logistics Corps.

Gordon is right .The tankers we used to refuel from were called RFA's royal fleet auxilliary vessels
