It led to a unified Spain. Ferdinand was the King of Aragon, and Isabel was the Queen of Castille. After their marriage, there was only the province of Granada left in Muslim hands. So they warred down Granada and became monarchs of a unified Spain. Ironically, Ferdinand and Isabella died without a male heir. There was a successor, Joanna, who was queen of Spain for a little while. She is called Joanna the Mad, because she was deposed because of supposed insanity. Her successor as King of Spain was Charles V, who was Holy Roman Emperor, Emperor of Germany. In 1565, Charles abdicated, leaving the throne of Spain the Philip II, a cousin.

So you can say that the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabellla was important, because they unified Spain by marriage and conquest. If you want to be playful, you could say that their dying without a male heir led to Charles V.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed for Ferdinand and Isabella. But in 1517, when Hernan Cortez conquered Mexico, it was for Charles V.

In 1469, the marriage of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon marked the opening of a period of growing success for Spain, since during their reign, Granada, the last stronghold of the Arabs in Spain, was conquered and, at the same time, in the same historic year of 1492, the caravels sent by the Crown of Castile under the command of Christopher Columbus discovered America. The Canary Islands became part of Spanish territory (1495), the hegemony of Spain in the Mediterranean, to the detriment of France, was affirmed with the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples, and Navarre was incorporated into the Kingdom.

First of all, their marriage united the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon for the first time since 1035. In past times, the two kingdoms had often been antagonistic to one another. United, they no longer used their armies to fight each other but to conquer the remaining Islamic kingdom.

They also financed the voyages of exploration of Columbus and others and laid claim to the lands and resources they discovered.

Its because the marriage solidified and allied Aragon( Isabella's country) with that of Spain( Ferdinand's country). Their combined naval strength would lead to the exploration of the Americas.
