I would not do it for money. I would probably not do it at all. Maybe if I met the would-be parents and knew they would take good care of my child, but $5,000 really isn't that much money for giving away such a valuable thing.

I don't even think you can put a price on it.

The only time I would ever have a child for someone else would maybe be if I had two close gay friends who where unable to adopt for some reason. Only then would I carry their child as long as I knew they would be wonderful parents and I could see my child.

I couldn't just sell my egg, though.

You have to fit what they're looking for (and if you do, you could get more). At one point in time, I seriously considered doing it. I was struggling to get through college. I was offered $3,000 because I was close to graduating, had light brown hair (that used to be blonde when I was young - meaning I'm a carrier for blonde hair), and blue eyes. Now that I am a college graduate and still hold those attributes, I could $5,000 or more depending on the agency.

You have to be physically fit, a nonsmoker, and educated (usually white, as well), mentally healthy without a history of mental illness (or even a family history of it), and at some of them you can't have a family history of certain cancers, genetic disorders, or other diseases. My cousin who did not go to college was told she was not a viable candidate for the service despite the fact that she and I look very similar and have much of the same family in common. You also have to be a nonsmoker, nondrinker, and nondrug user.

I guess ultimately I did not decide to go through with it because I did not want a part of me out in the world that I could not see or know or help if they were in trouble. I wanted to keep my genes to myself no matter how valuable they are to another person.

Peace,
Jenn

As a guy I do not have any but if I did I in all probability would not. Between not knowing whom my genetics would be combined with, whom my child would be raised by, as well as the distinct possibility of scientific experimentation, which could very well possibly be unethical, is enough reason to avoid succumbing to a cash is king mentality.

You can't really do it every month. It takes a series of hormone shots to do it and that costs money.
So, $5,000 plus medical expenses, yes
But I have too many conditions that are passed on genetically

That would not be a donation. The is selling your eggs. Donate means you are giving them away for free.

I find the idea of selling one's dna, one's own identity, so to speak, repugnant!
What is it with people who want to collect people like they collect coins or stamps? Hey, if ya' can't have kids, ya' can't have kids. So if you want to have them with someone else, then have the decency to at least tell the offspring, "Biologically, you are NOT your mother's child" (or in the case of artificial insemination: "Hey, 'Daddy' isn't your biological daddy.") Then and only then would I think it'd be ok.
