It a phrase i hear alot, whether recently in refence to the late eddie griffin, to celeb rehab types of the lohan's of the world or even towards myself regarding mental treatment. But i began to think, what does helping oneself actually mean, or rather what does it mean when someone suggests it.

Do we have our own concept of what help is, are we sugesting the one not getting doesn't .. or doesn't want it .. or only wants it if it's our own concept of help. Not belittling those trying to help others on this (get that's how it sounds), it's just a thought i'm wondering since i'm uncertain as to extent for which we actually know what help is.

I probably need to explain this better so any ideas would be great, thanks.

Maybe saying they can't control themselves, or don't have control.

It means that they did not know enough to get out of their own way. Expressions like that have led to things like, "It's a sickness", "It's genetic", etc. It's just an excuse for not trying to do anything or finding out what you should do. They don't have any will power. They need someone to tell them what they should be doing and force them to do it. These are people who think life should be easy and no effort needs to be made to follow a good and productive course. They don't care about anyone else, they want what they want now, do anything they want to do, everyone can just suffer through their egotism, They are self-destructuve, lacking safety skills. Capice? Verstehen sie? Comprendez vous?

'Couldn't help themself' is referring to ones lack of self discipline to make a responsible decision in their own best interest. Lack of self control. Where, there is no input from the brain and the person does things without thinking.

I think what you mean is that everybody thinks they need to help themselves, but they don't see it as a problem. What makes everybody think they are right in saying other people need help, when that is a personal judgement call.

Something like that?
