I have a Stihl chain saw and a Stihl weedeater ... for both I add about 2oz per gallon and they run fine.

I always use too much than too little if I not sure. It may smoke and if it foul a plug idling I know next time use less oil. My Poulan Chain saw use 32:1. My Shindawa (Spelling) weed-eater is old and it use 24:1 heavy oil mix, but, the newer models use less oil and the dealer told me I could use 32:1 and be OK. So, it is debatable. You can try telling what is what and we be able to be more specific.
stewpid makes a good point, 16:1 you can keep it running high RPMs and it not foul your plug. Then you can always add less if it does. Smoke is cheap and a new weed-eater or chainsaw is not.
Also, if you do foul a plug, do not throw it away. Just know your "Gap" and clean it. I just use one of those metal fingernail files and then check my "Gap".

adding too much oil in the mix shortens engine life by creating "Hot Spots" on the piston. Adding too much is almost as bad as not adding enough, be a chemist when you mix, you should also be adding a "carbon guard" to help the lower quality fuel (that's all we get now) burn better. You can use outboard oil in air cooled engined BUT, NOT LAWN MOWER 2-stroke mix in an outboard, outboard oil must say "BIA" or "NMMA" approved, it is different and should say "TCW-3" (two cycle water cooled, the "3" means that "Teflon" was added, it used to be "TCW-2" a few years ago).

A lot of times the fuel filter that is in the fuel tank is the problem. Remove the fuel filler cap, then with a scribe or coat hanger bent with a hook " J " shape, reach in the tank using the wire hook and catch the fuel feeder tube and remove it from the tank, at the end of the feeder tube is the fuel filter that has a felt liner around it, remove the felt buy a new one and then replace it on the filter. That should take care of your problem. That felt gets saturated with water thus the engine will not rev up, but will idle just fine.

in older equipment you can go as far as 50:1 and it works fine. If you start seeing fouled plugs, you went a little too far.

It varies, but 40:1 is typical. A bit less than 2oz/gal

many combinations. i use 16:1 in everything. doesn't hurt anything and keeps mosquitos away, too. that would be 8 ounces to the gallon.
