What does this quote from the article..."I believe that black artists have the right to interpret ourselves first, if nobody steps up to the plate to do that, then certainly pass it along to someone else." have to do with human rights violations in China? In the context of the story, they don't want a non-black doing the monument, plain and simple.

Yes, it is.

It is ironic that black people keep trying to say MLK Day isn't a black holiday, then this crap comes up. Just goes to show racists are racists, no matter what color their skin. I hope this minority-within-a-minority is shouted down by all those who truly seek a nation where humans are judged by character, not skin color.

I read that and thought the same thing. A monument is being built for a man who championed the rights of the black people. If they had wanted an American, prefereably a black American to do the sculpting, why didnt they speak up sooner? I would think it would be good enough to have the monument without stirring up more controversy.

I think the context of the story was that MLK would not support the Human Rights abuses in China which is why a chinese artist is hypocritical. Secondly, the sculptor didnt have to be black just American. It would only make sense for an American to construct an American monument.

I personally dont care because the statue looks spectaculer so far. Cant wait till it opens.

I think it's a very good idea. I am behind it 120%.
Martin Luther King Jr. didn't only work for black equality and fairness, it was for every single race.
I think it's sort of wrong to say that only a Black or an American should build it.

Yes its racist. King's underlying and most beautifil principle was that ALL human beings should be judged by the value of the character and not by the colour of their skin.

It seems his followers have COMPLETELY misunderstood his message. He believed that all human beings were kin and should behave as such...

It's a question of outsourcing the creation of a monument to a revered American. Stop trying to make it about race just yet.
