It's a conspiracy. Scurvy is a disease that sailors used to get because they didn't have fruits on long voyages and they'd get holes in their teeth and stuff. The only way to get rid of scurvy is to eat fruit but it's illegal to sell fruit as the cure for scurvy because it's not identified as a medicine.
They discovered a drug that can cure cancer but they're not using it because it was made with old technology and they won't make any money on it.
The U.S. is the richest country in the world and has the best health care system yet third world countries have longer life expectancies. Why???
They keep lowering and lowering the cholesterol rate so more and more people are being diagnosed with high cholesterol and are being put on meds for it. (med companies get a big pay off because of that)
A good example of this is birth control pills. Most girls with female problems take birth control pills because the doctors would rather give them a pill instead of having them take vitamins and herbs that do the exact same thing with next to no side effects. And we all know birth conrol pills come with lots of side effects.

I presently don't see it as the Lang of Opportunity, nor the Land of the Great, and never have and probably never will view it as such. I am 15 and live in Canada where my family moved when I was around 5 years old. I lived in Boston (yup, US) for 2 years after immigrating from Armenia. Although I don't clearly remember Boston (I was too young), I remember never to have liked it. And now, as I'm older and wiser, my idea of the US is worst. I don't see it as a place of opportunity. We couldn't live in Boston long because there was no opportunity. And as for the land of the great? ...Ha! I've always loved Europe - a cultured continent with civilized people - and I've always been surprised that, when interviewed, Americans have thought that Europe was in London or that Jesus was born in the US, or stupid things like that that are general knowledge. Americans greatly lack that. They have no idea of the people around them, of the history around them. They are bored at novels and art and prefer to plop down in front of their TV set and play their video games while mindlessly eating a pizza or a BigMac or another such unhealthy, disgusting food. And sometimes Americans are so prideful I feel like kicking them. Obviously the US does have it's good sides - an intelligent new president to replace the old, stupid one; and you can still find friendly and kind people in smaller cities - but there are some things that just make me hate it. Oh, and ever since they beat Spain 2-0 at the Confederations Cup, I've hated it more, ahaha :) This is my opinion, you can choose to love it or hate it; the US has many flaws just as any other country.

Whoever told you there are no depressed people in their country is almost certainly lying. People get depressed everywhere.
But there is something wrong with our Western countries. Something about the lives we lead is not satisfying us and so people are going down with depression. Is it the stress of modern life? The incessant materialism? The sense that an emotional or spiritual life is not catered for in our societies & therefore if you crave them you're a freak? The relentless junk culture we are exposed to which isn't nourishing and instils a false idea of what life is like in us?

People who are depressed aren't generally out and about in public and their families don't generally broadcast it to everyone. Just because you did not personally witness a stranger laying around in his bed doesn't mean he isn't depressed. Depression is something that has been documented throughout history, even before there ever was a United States. You have a good research tool at your disposal. Why not use it?

I think there are people in every country who suffer from depression. In many countries however, those who are depressed are considered disabled and mentally ill and hidden away because they are considered shameful and an embarassment to their families and society. Untouchable shall we say and not visible.
Canada and the US and most westernized industrial societies understand modern psychology and accept that there is nothing to be ashamed of with mental health issues. It is the developing countries around the world who are still operating behind the times in regards to mental health and disability.

What a bullshit. The people that told that to you are stupid, you were stupid to believe them and the people here that tries to explain why in "non-westerners" (actually Brazil and Mexico are western countries) countries people do not appears to suffer from depression are stupid too.

Sounds like BS to me. Maybe they just don't talk about it. Maybe we could talk about the question without pushing our religious agenda Bibs.

Maybe it never gets diagnosed in their culture. Or maybe they use prayer more than we do. We ignore this as a solution to this kind of problem.
