Upside:
They may look cool, sometimes.
Can generally run larger tires with lower side wall for more road feel. (think track days, Limited to a resonable size like 18/19" depending on HP and TQ #'s)

Downside:
Heavier, slow you down, A LOT.
Less tire sidewall means more bent rims more often.
Much more road feel/harshness in the car. (like a stiffer suspension with none of the positives)

Another reason probably would be to let people know that you have money. I honestly see no point in big rims, as long as the wheel and rims work right, im good. But you knwo it's always nice to have good things to make you look good.

no advantaget to it. unless you are planning to change your brakes and rotors be prepared to get brakes more than you normally would. the bigger the rim the smaller the thickness of the tire so you are more likley to get a flat or damaged rim and it cost me 250 just to repair a 17" so i think 20" and up will cost 2 or 3 times that. do what you like its your dime and your ride but i would never go bigger than 18"

in the same wheel size, larger rim means less rubber for tire. Thiner tires make huge difference in handling. You would get less leaning of the car when taking high speed turns.

So you can feel like a rap star and others think you're silly for spending all the money on the ugly rims.

The guy who sells the rims gets richer, and you get identified as a mental lightweight, saving people the trouble of taking you seriously.
