The first question you need to answer is what are YOU interested in ? Then find some images and word and play with them on a big sheet without fixing them down .When you think you have it OK then begin to glue.rememeber that collage doesn't need to be just paper. It can be found objects like keys (to the heart-the door-knowledge etc) you can make a box collage and add dimension by "floating" some pieces forward and others at the back , use foam to set them forward but make sure it cannot be seen. The theme can be fantasy, film, fun ,fruit furniture or fur ( get my drift?) -find a letter of the alphabet that has words with meaning to you and collect images)( a good place to find free images is on flickr.com or morguefile.com, just think of something you like and go for it.
Good luck!

I love collage work. I once had an assignment to represent how I felt about "rehab" What are your feeling and emotions surrounding....the patient, the doctors, nurses, family members and the emotions regarding "rehab" The piece was for a local Rehab Hospital, with 10 exhibiting artists. The pieces toured for about a year and them were returned to the artists.
Was really thought provoking and interesting. And I loved my piece. It was 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. And from the bottom I had the darkness of the place (sickness, injury, mental instability) and from the edges came help from many sources to lift up the darkness and bring the object into the light of healing and awareness. I still love that piece and still have it. TOTALLY ABSTRACT.

Another piece I did was entitled "the trinkets of being" Another was the "faces of woman"
How about "Right in the Middle of being Wrong"
Let "get to the top" try "finding my soul"

hope that give you some food for thought. It gets my creative juices going.

I hate it when the art teacher says, "It's too general." For an animal theme you might want to pick something like animals found in the __________ area at a zoo, or just zoo animals. Or maybe pets. Or maybe by animal kingdom, (sea life is rather popular where I live if you can get to the beach.) Or you can do animals you would find locally and no where else. Or birds. Or maybe night creatures, (that's what I would do.) Have fun! :-)

You could go with a monochromatic color scheme, facial expressions, sports, entertainment, things you love, things you hate. There is a pretty broad spectrum.
