In our Sky or in the Universe? In our Sky there are Thousands. In the Universe? billions times billions

About 70 sextillion stars exist in the Universe.

Theoretically, the human eye would see about 2,500 stars in the clear sky but, in practice, the atmospheric extinction and dust reduce the number to 1500 to 2000 (in the center of a city as few as 200 to 500).

There is only one star in the sky. Its light is refracted by a giant disco globe hanging just out of sight. We only THINK there is more than one star, but someday scientists will develop a telescope good enough to detect the celestial disco globe.

An awful lot.

The correct answer depends on whether you're asking how many can be viewed with the naked eye, or a visual telescope, a radio telescope, a space-based telescope, or how many are believed to be out there, given what we know about the number of galazies and size of the universe.
