If it is designed for 98 it probably won't run XP. It should however run 2000. The 2000 Professional version is a very small program and it doesn't require much RAM to run.
If you did get XP to run on your system, it would be very slow as your motherboard most likely has a small and limited amount of RAM. Windows XP will run with 128MB of RAM, but it runs at crawl speed, and if you open more than one process it will like come to a stall and freeze.
One problem with 2000 is that it has very little in the way of drivers, so before you install that program make sure you can get the drivers needed.

You may have to upgrade it, windows 98 requires 64 mb of ram. So if your computer came with 98, the ram is probably low. Windows xp requires 128 mb of ram so if you meet that, you can install xp if your processor is good enough. Your best bet is to install windows 2000 on it. Windows 2000 also runs on like 64mb of ram. So buy (or pirate) a windows 2000 cd and install it

If the computer will handle it, pop in the XP CD and install. Don't try it with 128mb of memory. 256 is barely enough for XP.
You would probably be a lot happier if you went to Dell.com or somewhere and got a new $300 computer with XP on it. An old 98 machine isn't going to break any speed records with XP.
