I just finished this play and after reading it I am left with a very unsatisfied feeling. After thinking more about it, I began to wonder what I was supposed to get out of reading it and I really cant think of anything. I was wondering, for those that know of this play, what are you supposed to get out reading this play? Because I am at a lost in trying to figure this out.

Thanks for the help. :]

In other words, what are you supposed to take from reading this play?

(Not sure if I had the best wording up there)

What you are supposed to take from this play is actual thought. It is supposed to send you away thinking and wondering. Ain't it great?? A play that actually asks you to think and make up your own mind about it.

The original production on Broadway brought many similar responses. It was really tanking. People just weren't going to see it. They were afraid of it -- that they wouldn't understand it and it would make them look stupid.

So the producers of the play came up with a very interesting way of promoting the play. They put ads in the NY newspapers saying "only intelligent people should come see Waiting for Godot". Just like that, they sold out for months! Nobody wanted to be considered unintelligent!

Waiting for Godot is like looking at the Mona Lisa. Why does she smile? I don't know. I'm not her. I'm not Leonardo. I wasn't there. So she smiles for ME - for whatever reason I choose for her to smile. Maybe it was gas - who knows? So when you look at it, you take away what ever you wish to take from it. You don't even have to LIKE it if you don't want to. That is the beauty of art. It is all subjective.

Your response of feeling unsatisfied and thinking more about it is exactly what the author intended. It is meant to draw you in to the play and allow you to make the conclusions. Pax - C

A very good answer from Pax C or Persiphone. I would add that you are also supposed to feel a sense of absurdity in the play. The world does not make sense because of all the contradictions in it.
You might want to look at some of Beckett's other work like Act Without Words.

I found it a fraudulent and trendy work of it's time. What I got out of it, when I saw it in the late 70s or early 80s, was, believe it or not, comedy. --A little scuffling slapstick and 2 funny character portraits. i think looking at it for more than that is a waste.
