For a project I am doing in school I must provide examples of art with the date of the piece. Would it be more correct for me to date the original Virgin_Of_The_Rocks by Leonardo as 1483, 1483-1486 or 1486.

If you're finding conflicting data.. what you might do to cover yourself is write 'circa 1486' or 'c. 1486 .' I don't think anyone would fault you for that.

The Paris version of Virgin of the Rocks was contracted to be finished by 1483. However, Leonardo did not meet the deadline. The exact dates are disputed, but most scholars use a range of dates, usually c.1483-1486.
